Storytellers are one of the first choices you make when starting a new save in Paralives. Your chosen Storyteller helps shape the difficulty and overall tone of your game, from a relaxed experience protected from serious problems to a more chaotic life filled with additional challenges. There are currently three Storytellers to choose from: Stella, Maxence, and Ricardo Castello III. Your choice is not permanent, so you can change Storytellers or customise their settings at any point during your save.
Paralives Storytellers Overview
| Storyteller | Difficulty | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Stella | Easy | Cozy gameplay, storytelling, building families, and players who prefer fewer severe negative events |
| Maxence | Balanced | A standard experience with a fair mixture of progress, setbacks, and everyday challenges |
| Ricardo Castello III | Difficult | Players who enjoy chaos, household accidents, financial pressure, and unexpected challenges |

Which Paralives Storyteller Should You Choose?
Stella: Easy and Cozy Gameplay
Stella is a Bernese mountain dog who protects your Parafolks from some of life’s lowest lows. She provides the easiest and most relaxed of the three default experiences.
Choose Stella if you want to focus on:
- Building and decorating
- Raising a family
- Developing relationships
- Completing goals without constant disruption
- Creating stories with fewer severe negative events
- Learning how Paralives works
Stella is a good choice for beginners, but she is not limited to new players. She also suits anyone who prefers cozy gameplay or wants more control over the direction of their Parafolks’ stories. She may protect your household from the worst that life can throw at them, but that does not mean absolutely nothing can go wrong.
Maxence: Fair and Balanced Gameplay
Maxence provides the standard Paralives experience. Her settings are designed to create a fair balance between positive progress and everyday challenges.
Choose Maxence if you want:
- A mixture of positive and negative events
- Challenges that do not overwhelm your household
- A balanced first Paralives save
- Space for both planned stories and unexpected moments
- Gameplay that is neither especially easy nor deliberately chaotic
Maxence is probably the best place to start if you are unsure which Storyteller to select. She allows you to experience the different systems without offering as much protection as Stella or creating as many difficulties as Ricardo.
Ricardo Castello III: Challenging and Chaotic Gameplay
Ricardo Castello III brings additional difficulty and unexpected challenges into your Parafolks’ daily lives. This can include household accidents and more demanding everyday situations.
Choose Ricardo if you enjoy:
- Unpredictable events
- Household chaos
- More difficult survival gameplay
- Financial challenges
- Recovering from accidents and setbacks
- Stories that do not always follow your original plan
Ricardo is particularly well suited to challenge saves, including rags-to-riches households. He can also make established or wealthy families more interesting by introducing problems that money and careful planning cannot always prevent.
Can You Change Your Storyteller?
Your first choice is not permanent. You can change your Storyteller at any time without beginning a new save.
To change your Storyteller:
- Open the pause menu using the three dots in the top-right corner.
- Select Storyteller.
- Choose Stella, Maxence, or Ricardo Castello III.
- Review and adjust the individual settings.
- Return to your household and continue playing.
You can switch between the three default Storytellers or customise the settings to create your own preferred difficulty.
This means you could begin with Stella while learning the game, move to Maxence once your household is established, and unleash Ricardo when life starts becoming suspiciously peaceful.
What Do Storytellers Control?
Storytellers influence more than the general difficulty of your game. They also provide access to settings covering time, aging, pregnancy, careers, money, and other parts of everyday life.
Time and Aging
You can control:
- Whether household Parafolks age
- Whether Parafolks outside your household age
- The duration of each life stage
- The relationship between in-game minutes and real-life seconds
Life stages can be set to short, normal, or long. These options are useful for adapting the game to different styles of play. A longer lifespan gives you more time to develop careers, relationships, and skills, while shorter life stages can create faster generational gameplay.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy settings include:
- Trimester duration
- Length of labour
- Chance of becoming pregnant when attempting
- Chance of having twins
- Chance of having triplets
These settings give players much more control over family gameplay. You could lower the chance of multiples for a quiet family save or increase it considerably if one baby at a time feels far too manageable.
Careers
Career settings allow you to adjust:
- Job performance requirements
- The threshold for receiving strikes at work
- Whether Parafolks automatically eat while working
- Whether Parafolks automatically use the toilet while working
The automatic-care options can have a noticeable effect on difficulty. Stella and Maxence allow Parafolks to look after some of their needs while at work, while Ricardo’s default settings require more careful preparation before each shift.
Money
Storytellers can also affect your household’s starting funds.
By default, Stella provides slightly more money than Maxence and Ricardo. However, starting funds can be customised, so you are free to begin with a comfortable amount or remove the money for a proper rags-to-riches challenge.
Default Storyteller Settings
At launch, the Storyteller settings are divided into four main categories: Time, Pregnancy, Careers, and Money.
Time Settings
| Setting | Ricardo Castello III | Maxence | Stella |
|---|---|---|---|
| Household Parafolks age | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Non-household Parafolks age | No | No | No |
| Duration of life stages | Normal | Normal | Normal |
| In-game minutes per real-life second | 0.66 | 0.66 | 0.66 |
Pregnancy Settings
| Setting | Ricardo Castello III | Maxence | Stella |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trimester duration | 21 hours | 21 hours | 21 hours |
| Labour duration | 2 hours | 2 hours | 2 hours |
| Pregnancy chance when attempting | 50% | 50% | 50% |
| Chance of twins | 5% | 20% | 5% |
| Chance of triplets | 1% | 10% | 1% |
Interestingly, Maxence has the highest default chance of twins and triplets. Apparently, “fair and balanced” occasionally means handing you three babies and wishing you the very best.
Career Settings
| Setting | Ricardo Castello III | Maxence | Stella |
|---|---|---|---|
| Job-performance threshold for strikes | 10 | 10 | 10 |
| Automatically eat at work | No | Yes | Yes |
| Automatically use the toilet at work | No | Yes | Yes |
Starting Funds
| Storyteller | Default Starting Funds |
|---|---|
| Ricardo Castello III | ₱30,000 |
| Maxence | ₱30,000 |
| Stella | ₱35,000 |
Although the Storytellers have different difficulty descriptions, many of their visible default settings are similar. Part of their difference comes from the events and Story Cards associated with each difficulty, rather than every setting changing dramatically.
All of these options can be adjusted, allowing you to keep the parts of a Storyteller you enjoy while changing anything that does not suit your save.
Story Cards
Your Storyteller continues to influence the game after you have created your household.
While your Parafolks are sleeping, you can use the Storyteller icon to receive Story Card choices. These cards can provide:
- Daily objectives
- Life goals
- Temporary buffs
- Financial rewards
- Career benefits
- Opportunities for individual Parafolks
- Events suited to your chosen difficulty
You are usually presented with several options, allowing you to choose the one that best fits your plans.
Some cards are connected to a particular Parafolk, so check who will receive the goal or benefit before making your selection. This can help you guide different household members towards separate careers, relationships, and personal stories.
Your chosen Storyteller influences the types of cards and events that can appear. Stella’s choices support a gentler experience, Maxence offers a balanced mixture, and Ricardo is more likely to bring difficult or unpredictable situations.
Storyteller Social Interactions
Your Storyteller can occasionally appear while your Parafolks are socialising. When this happens, they may provide a special dialogue option with a greater benefit than the standard choices.
The exact reason these interactions appear is not always clear, but selecting the highlighted Storyteller option can provide a useful boost and may help move the relationship or conversation forward.
Creating a Custom Difficulty
You do not have to use any of the three Storytellers exactly as they were designed.
For example, you could:
- Choose Stella but reduce the household’s starting money
- Use Ricardo while allowing Parafolks to eat and use the toilet at work
- Select Maxence and increase the chance of multiple births
- Turn off aging for a permanent household
- Create longer life stages for slow storytelling
- Shorten life stages for a faster legacy challenge
- Increase career difficulty while keeping other systems relaxed
This makes Storytellers less like fixed difficulty modes and more like starting points for creating your own version of Paralives.
Tips for Choosing a Storyteller
- Choose Stella when learning the game or creating a cozy household.
- Choose Maxence for your first balanced playthrough.
- Choose Ricardo when you want accidents, setbacks, and unpredictable stories.
- Review the individual settings even after choosing a Storyteller.
- Increase the lifespan if you want time to explore skills, careers, and relationships.
- Check which Parafolk will receive a Story Card goal before selecting it.
- Do not restart your save just to change the difficulty. Storytellers can be changed at any time.
- Combine Storyteller settings with your own challenge rules to create more specialised gameplay.
Final Thoughts
Paralives Storytellers allow players to decide whether their save should be cozy, balanced, or completely chaotic. Stella protects your Parafolks from the harshest events, Maxence provides a fair standard experience, and Ricardo Castello III makes everyday life more challenging.
The best part of the system is that these choices are not permanent. You can customise individual settings or switch Storytellers whenever your household needs a change.
If your peaceful family save has become too easy, Ricardo can soon fix that for you.
