The Sims 4 Rags to Riches: Perfect Ranch Family Challenge is a six-stage challenge where your Sim starts with nothing and slowly builds a complete countryside ranch.

You begin with 0 simoleons, an empty lot, no house, no job, no partner, no children, and no animals.

By the end of the challenge, your Sim should have a farmhouse, crops, animals, pets, children, a farm hand, and a working petting zoo home business.

Each stage must be completed before moving on to the next.

Recommended Packs

This challenge works best with:

  • Cottage Living
  • Horse Ranch
  • Cats & Dogs
  • Growing Together
  • Parenthood
  • Businesses & Hobbies
  • Enchanted by Nature

You can still adapt the challenge if you do not own every pack. If you are missing a feature, replace it with the closest option available in your game.

Enchanted by Nature is especially useful in the early stages because foraging can help your Sim find food, plants, apothecary items, and collectables. Collectables can be sold for profit, making foraging one of the strongest early-game money methods.

Move them onto an empty lot.

Set their money to 0 simoleons.

Your lot must start with:

  • Fishing
  • Foraging
  • Collecting
  • Gardening
  • Selling collectables
  • Selling plants
  • Odd jobs

If you have Enchanted by Nature, use foraging as much as possible. Your Sim can forage for food, plants, collectables, and apothecary items. Food helps with survival, plants can start your garden, and collectables can be sold for money.

Stage 2: Building the First Farmhouse

Stage 2 is about getting your Sim out of pure survival mode.

Your Sim does not need a beautiful farmhouse yet, but they do need a basic functional home.

During this stage, your Sim may continue earning money through collecting, foraging, gardening, fishing, crafting, woodworking, and odd jobs.

Your Sim still cannot join a normal career yet.

A normal career is only allowed once your Sim has:

  • A toilet
  • A shower or bath

  • Add a fridge or cooking area
  • Start a proper crop area
  • Use crafted furniture where possible to save money
  • Begin saving for chickens or your first animal setup
  • Begin saving towards the home business

Opening a home business costs 750 simoleons, so this may become one of your first big money goals.

You may move on to Stage 3 once your Sim has a basic functional home and a crop area.

Stage 3: Starting the Ranch

Stage 3 is where the ranch begins properly.

Your Sim should now move from survival into farming, animal care, and shop income.

During this stage, your Sim may make money through:

  • Crops
  • Animal products
  • Fishing
  • Foraging
  • Collectables
  • Crafting
  • Woodworking
  • Nectar making, if available
  • Shop sales
  • Ranch-related activities

  • Add chickens
  • Build a chicken coop and run
  • Add either a cow or llama
  • Build the first barn or animal shelter

  • Start planning the full ranch layout
  • Build a small farm shop or selling area

If you can afford it, open the home business during this stage.

If you cannot afford it yet, you must open the home business before starting Stage 5.

You may move on to Stage 4 once your ranch has chickens, one larger farm animal, crops, and a basic selling area.

Stage 4: Building the Family

Stage 4 adds the family side of the challenge.

Your Sim now needs to balance money, animals, crops, relationships, and household growth.

Your household must eventually include:

  • At least one adult Sim
  • At least two children
  • One dog
  • One cat
  • One horse

The dog, cat, and horse count towards the 8 household slots, so plan carefully.

Your Sim does not need to get married unless you want them to. The family can be married, unmarried, single-parent, adoptive, blended, or any setup you prefer.

  • Move in a partner, if using one
  • Remove any money the partner brings with them
  • Have, adopt, or prepare for the first child
  • Add a nursery or child space

You may move on to Stage 5 once your household has started the family side of the challenge and has added at least one pet or wildlife feature.

Stage 5: Building the Petting Zoo

Stage 5 is where the ranch becomes a visitor attraction.

The petting zoo is the main business goal for this challenge. It does not need to be huge, but it does need to look like a proper visitor area.

To count as a petting zoo, it must include:

  • A visitor entrance
  • A ticket area, check-in area, or farm shop
  • A visitor toilet
  • A fenced animal viewing area
  • At least 3 different animal types for visitors to see

  • Add a visitor toilet

  • Open the home business if you have not already done so

You may move on to Stage 6 once the visitor area, animal areas, and home business are ready for the grand opening.

Stage 6: Grand Opening Finale

Stage 6 is the final stage.

This is your last chance to finish the ranch, open the petting zoo, and score the challenge.

Once the petting zoo has opened, visitors have attended, and the final family photo has been taken, the challenge ends.

You cannot continue building, earning, or adding animals after Stage 6 is complete.

Stage 6 Goals

Complete these final goals:

  • Finish the farmhouse
  • Finish all animal areas
  • Finish the crop fields
  • Add the fish tank
  • Complete the store/cafe/visitor areas

Challenge Ending

The challenge ends once Stage 6 is complete.

At that point, stop playing and score the ranch honestly.

You do not need a perfect score to complete the challenge. The goal is to see how much of the perfect ranch family dream you can build before the final stage ends.

The final moment should be a family photo somewhere on the ranch, ideally with the farmhouse, animals, crops, or petting zoo in the background.

Whether the ranch becomes a perfect countryside business or a half-finished field full of panic and chickens, the challenge ends there.
