The Home County key art with player character and village backdro

The Home County – First Impressions – Review

Platform(s): PC
Developer: Swanworth
Publisher: Self-published
Release Date: 22 September 2025
Genre: Village-management, life simulation
Playtime at Review: 40 minutes first session

Overview

A cosy village-management life sim inspired by Edwardian Britain. You recruit villagers, build shacks and workspaces, decorate your settlement, and dip into hobbies like fishing and painting while exploring mines and light story events.

First Impressions

Visuals & Performance:
Charming, simple art that runs smoothly with short load times. Occasional tiny stutters noted once or twice. Windowed mode has a UI visibility quirk where some menus do not fully fit unless you use fullscreen or borderless windowed.

Gameplay Mechanics:
Clear, approachable controls with a clean hotbar and quick tool swapping. Early loop includes chopping wood, placing crop plots, planting seeds for your farmer, and basic fishing. The pub’s in-game card battler is a fun surprise and plays well. Fishing has a steeper learning curve than expected.

Story & Atmosphere:
Light, quirky setup with a duchess, a crystal garden to restore, and village “policies” that shape titles like Lord, Lady, Sir, Dame, or Rev. Dialogue is whimsical, but limited. Worldbuilding breadcrumbs in houses and notices keep intrigue growing over time.

Sound & Music:
Pleasant, cosy soundtrack that fits the slower pace. Ambient effects support the rural feel.

What I Liked So Far

● Gentle, pressure-free pacing with a satisfying build and recruit loop
● Unexpected pub card game mini-mode adds variety
● Village identity system with titles and policies hints at long-term role-play

What Could Improve

● Windowed mode UI cropping needs polish
● Fishing onboarding is unclear and feels punishing at first (or im a slow learner LOL)
● Quest guidance could be stronger for tasks like the lost kite
● More conversational depth with NPCs would lift attachment

  • Player stands in a churchyard beside a stone chapel with gravestones, morning HUD visible, The Home County village sim
  • Crystal Garden glasshouse under repair with scaffolding and a red post box on the village green
  • Starting campsite with green tent, easel, bench and water pump by a river in The Home County

Who It’s For

Players who enjoy Stardew-style village sims, relaxed management, and cosy worldbuilding. Great fit for Sims builders who like light goals without time pressure.

Early Verdict

A likeable, good-value cosy sim at £11.79 with smooth performance and a few standout ideas. First session left me more curious the longer I played. If you enjoy gentle village builders with a British flavour, this is worth your time already.
